How to Child-proof Your iPhone

How to Child-proof Your iPhone

Now that everyone is at home and children are staying home from school, leaving your iPhone laying around can be a cause for disaster. A nightmare situation can include your toddler accidentally sending out a companywide email or sending a payment to a random user. Children are also becoming a lot better at navigating iPhones and playing around with what’s on the screen. Below we are going to show you a few ways you can physically and digitally protect your iPhone so accidents are prevented.

Physical Safeguards

Recommended Screen Protectors and Phone Cases

Having physical safeguards such as protective cases and screens can make it far more difficult for a toddler to enter your iPhone or iPad. Check out Luxe Digital’s post on Best iPhone Cases for Protection & Style in 2020 that you can slide onto your iPhone. Some cases have foldable covers that make it just that more difficult for your child to open and access the phone. Other cases have protective film over the touch ID button for older iPhone models. Overall, having this protective equipment in place is not only helpful for preventing your toddler from gaining access to the phone, but also increases your protection against scathes, scratches, falls, and breaks. You don’t want to be distracted, only to turn around and see your phone is being thrown across the room! With the protective gear, you will also get higher trade-in value if you are looking to get a new phone. The higher the quality your phone’s external condition is in, the more you will receive for it!   Digital Safeguards  How to Turn on Guided Access to pick and choose what apps your child can use The main features of guided access can help you to:
  1. Control hardware features that can be toggled
    • Turn off the sleep/wake button
    • Turn on/off volume buttons
    • Limit to what extent your phone responds to motion
  2. Select specific applications on the device that can be used
    • For example, you can turn off all your mailing apps but keep all gaming applications available for use
  3. Select areas of the screen that cannot be touched and tampered with
    • You can turn off the keyboard so it no longer pops up. This turns off typing abilities
    • You can turn off touch so the device ignores screen touches
In order to turn ON guided access you must go to your Settings app (gear icon). From there you can scroll down a bit and hit “Accessibility.” Towards the bottom of the screen there is a button that says “Guided Access.” Hit that and turn it on! Once you have guided access turned on, your iPhone will become impenetrable. And the best part of this feature is that you can set a specific time limit for this to be on. Once that time limit is reached – your iPhone’s access reverts back to normal.
Turn on Face ID or Touch ID
If you turn on Face ID or Touch ID, your child will not be able to enter your phone whatsoever. After locking the screen, your phone will be locked and can only be entered with a password of Face/Touch ID. The ID applies to the owner of the phone and cannot be used by other people unless changed in the settings.
 Set a password
You may be surprised that not everyone sets a password on their iPhone. Many people enjoy the convenience of unlocking their phone without having to input numbers or letters to gain access. Make sure to turn on your password feature and make it difficult to remember so that your child doesn’t figure out how to hack your phone when you aren’t looking!
