Should I Upgrade My iPhone to the Latest iOS?

Should I Upgrade My iPhone to the Latest iOS?

While we often get notified that there is an available update for our iPhones, about once a year Apple releases a new version of iOS. IOS is the software Apple develops to run iPhones. Behind the software are thousands of developers and engineers working tirelessly to ensure the latest iPhone software can power iPhone users’ phones flawlessly. While there are many pros and cons to installing the latest iPhone updates, here at Manhattan iPhone Repair we believe our users should update to the latest iOS software when they are first able to because we have found the pros far outweigh the cons.

What Does an iOS Update Do?

When you download and install a new iPhone update, what your iPhone is doing is updating the software that is stored within the device and which ensures your iPhone does what you want, when you want it. Usually within major iOS updates users find a plethora of new features along with other pros such as improved battery life and better call quality. While many users think the hardware of an iPhone dictates some of these features, to the surprise of many, software plays a big role in the performance of the iPhone as well.

Can Every iPhone Be Updated?

After about 5-6 years, Apple stops supporting iPhones for updates. After the 5-6 year mark, the hardware powering your iPhone can no longer keep up with the demands of Apple’s software and for that reason Apple no longer provides software updates for certain iPhones. When they make these decisions they ensure the customer is very aware and post the information on their website.

How Can I Update My iPhone?

Apple’s iPhones have an iPhone update feature built within them. To see if there is an update available for your iPhone, go to Settings ->General -> Software Update. When you open that screen your iPhone will contact Apple’s servers to see if there is an update available for your iPhone. If it is, you will be prompted to download and install the update. Certain updates can take up to 1 hour to download and install, so we recommend you update your iPhone during a time where you do not need to use it. Apple requires iPhones to have at least 50% charge or to be plugged into a power outlet when updating them to ensure the phone does not run out of battery during the update. Also, we recommend doing updates when using a stable Wi-Fi connection as the file size is often quite large.
