I’ve Spilled Water on My Laptop – Now What?

Sitting at your desk working, you are in a rush because it is the night before a big deadline and the paper that is due only has three out of 20 pages written. You turn quickly only to knock over your tall glass of water and it spills all over your laptop or MacBook. Yikes!  One of the worst things you can do is start to panic. Quick response and quick action will ensure your laptop does not drown in the water.  At Manhattan iPhone Repair, our experts provide you with the best liquid damage MacBook repair in NYC along with other brands of laptops. Call us today to schedule an appointment.  Below, we will walk you through the steps and actions you should take to protect your computer. Immediately Turn Off the Laptop  As soon as the water spills on your laptop, turn it off. This will help prevent a short circuit from happening. You do not need to spend time navigating to the windows menu to turn it off. In fact, simply hold down the power button until the computer shuts down.  Leaving your device running will only allow the water to touch internal components that will react to the water and cause serious damage such as logic board failure.  Once the laptop has been turned off, unplug the charger from the wall and the laptop, should they be connected to it.  Remove All Accessories  If you are someone who uses additional accessories such as a keyboard, headphones, mouse, or anything else, you want to remove these from the device. Leaving them plugged in may allow water to enter the USB cables that they attach to your computer through.  Take Out the Battery  Once the laptop is turned off and the accessories removed from it, you want to take out the battery. To do this:
  1. Flip your laptop over and locate the battery latch on the bottom
  2. Slide the latch into the unlock position and hold it until the battery is released from the device
  3. Once the battery pops out, remove it and inspect it
  4. If the battery is wet, you will need to replace it, as it will no longer be safe to use
Drain and Dry the Laptop  If the liquid spills on top of your laptop, you want to dab it up with a soft towel making sure to pay special attention to the USB ports, small cracks and crevices, the touchpad, vents, keyboard, and trackpad.  Once you have dried up the exterior spill, you should:
  1. Turn the laptop so that it is upside down on top of a soft towel to allow the water to drain out
  2. Let the laptop sit for a minimum of 24 hours
  3. Never place the laptop in rice as this can cause more damage should the rice get into the device
  4. Never use extreme temperatures to dry the device
Take the Laptop to a Professional  Before you attempt to turn your laptop back on, you should take it to an electronics repair shop in NYC to have it inspected. You never know where water may be hiding inside the device and you never know if the water has caused serious damage to your laptop or MacBook.  At Manhattan iPhone Repair, we specialize in water damage and can inspect, diagnose, and repair your laptop for you.
