I Can’t Get Past the Boot Loop – What Should I Do?

One of the most frustrating things that can probably happen to your phone is to turn it on and be stuck in the boot loop process. Getting stuck in a boot loop is common and can happen for a number of reasons. It is an issue that will need to be addressed quickly though because if it is not corrected, the phone will continue to stay stuck in the boot loop. Below, we will go over some of the solutions that can help you get your phone unstuck.  Why Is My Phone Stuck in Boot Loop? Boot loop is not something that you want to be stuck in, so understanding what causes it to happen can help you prevent it. Some of the reasons it happens include:
  • Having a jailbroken phone
  • Having an unstable connection when connecting your phone to the compute
  • Liquid damager
  • Experiencing a failed software update
How to Fix the Boot Loop Issue  We will go over some of the different solutions that you can attempt to try to knock your phone out of the boot loop cycle. If you find that you are continuing to have these issues even after you try the solutions listed, you may have a logic board issue and you should have your phone looked at.  Perform a Forced Restart on Your Phone  Since you are stuck in a boot loop, you cannot go in and restart the phone manually, so you will need to do it forcefully. To do this, follow the steps based on your iPhone version.
  • iPhone 8 and newer versions: Press and release the volume up button and then quickly do the same with the volume down button. Hold the power button down until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Allow the phone to restart
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Press and hold down the power and volume down buttons simultaneously until you see the screen go black and then release them. Press the power button down until the Apple logo appears
  • iPhone 6 and later versions: Press down the home and power buttons at the same time and keep holding them until the screen goes black. Press the power button and hold it down until the Apple logo appears on the screen
Reset the Device’s Settings  Sometimes, the settings on the device become garbled and you may have set something one way and it can cause disruptions in the phone. To fix this, do the following:
  1. Click on the settings app
  2. Navigate to general
  3. Tap on reset
  4. Click all settings
Clean Up Your Applications  While applications can be fun, informative, and helpful, sometimes they can cause issues with the way your device functions, especially if they have a corrupt file or are not compatible with your iOS. One way to try to prevent a boot loop in the future is to clean up your applications. To do that, follow these steps:
  1. Head to the settings app
  2. Check all apps
  3. Tap on each one of your apps and click storage
  4. Tap clear cache
If you notice that a specific app is causing the problem, you may need to remove it from your phone.  Enter into Recovery Mode  Fixing issues with your device is not always as easy as just going in and making changes, especially if your phone is stuck in a boot loop. One way to help stop this issue in the future is to enter recovery mode on your phone. It is important to note that this can erase data on your phone, so you will want to back up your data before you start the process.  To enter recovery mode, do the following based on your iPhone model:
  1. Turn off the iPhone
  2. Connect your USB to the computer only and open up iTunes
    1. iPhone 8 and newer: Connect the cable to the phone and at the same time, hold down the home button
    2. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Connect the cable to the phone and hold down the volume button at the same time
    3. iPhone 6 and older: Connect the cable to the phone and, at the same time, hold down the side button
  3. Keep holding down the button until you see the iTunes application appear and release
  4. You will see a popup that asks you to update or restore
  5. Click restore and allow the phone to go through the steps
