Whenever you use your iPhone, it generates heat. The heat is from a culmination of the device working and the parts heat up from the work they are conducting. While some heat is normal, too much heat is NOT normal. In fact, if your phone feels very hot or it is hotter than normal, you should have it looked at and take notice. Damage can happen to your phone when it is allowed to remain too hot for too long. Let’s take a look at what you can do when your phone becomes too hot and some of the reasons this could be happening. What to Do When Your Phone is Overheating If you have received a temperature error on your phone or you feel like your phone is very hot, you should take the following steps to protect it from any heat-related damage. Move the phone to a cool area – you should move your phone to an area that is cooler, so that the temperature will come down. For example, if you are outdoors, try to put the phone in shade or take it into the house to cool off. What you do not want to do is put the phone directly in front of the AC or in the fridge/freezer. Remove your phone from its charger – if you notice the issue occurs when your phone is charging, take the phone off the charger. While some heat while charging is normal, if the brick or phone becomes too hot, this can indicate a problem with the charger itself or the battery in your phone. Turn off high-powered apps – when apps use too much power, they can cause the phone to run hot. Take a moment to close out of all high-powered apps and allow the phone to cool. Perform an update – if your phone’s software is out of date, this can lead to problems with the phone’s ability to regulate its temperature. Check to see if your phone is due for an update and perform one, if necessary. Why Is My Phone Overheating?Below, we will cover some of the reasons why your phone may be overheating and what steps you can take at the moment. Short Circuit A short circuit occurs when one of the circuits in your phone has a bad connection. This can lead to poor temperature regulation and your phone may become hot to the touch. If you think you have a short in your phone, you can do the following:
Turn the phone on in a minimal hardware configuration
Disassemble your phone and remove any components that are not required for it to operate
Connect the cable to your phone and turn the phone back on
Once the phone boots back on, start to connect the parts one by one and watch how the phone behaves
If the issue appears when you connect a specific part, you have located the short
If you cannot identify a specific part causing the issue, then you may have a logic board problem
Battery Your battery can go bad for a number of reasons and you may notice obvious signs such as a swollen battery. But, if the signs are not obvious, you can check to see if you have a bad battery by doing this:
Head to the settings app
Click battery
Tap on battery health
If your battery is at 80 percent health, it needs to be looked at. Anything lower than that or any signs of damage means the battery should be replaced. Logic Board Your logic board registers the temperature of your device and helps to regulate it. When there is an issue with your logic board, your phone can overheat quickly. If the above fixes do not work, it may be because there is an issue with the motherboard. If you think that your logic board has been damaged, it is important to have it looked at by a professional.
