MacBook Keys Not Working? Here’s How to Fix Them!

It can be extremely frustrating to open up your MacBook only to start typing and realize that either a) the keys aren’t working, b) the keys are repeating themselves, or c) the keys are sticking. Problems with the keyboard can arise from time to time and when they do, they bring along a lot of stress and can disrupt your workflow. Fortunately, when you do experience issues with your MacBook keys not working, the solution is usually something very simple. My MacBook Keys Don’t Work – Why Is That? If you have found that your MacBook keys are not working properly, there is a reason for it. Some of the most common reasons include:
  • Slow keys is turned on
  • The keys are damaged or dirty
  • The keyboard itself is damaged
  • You need to perform an update for the keyboard
  • There is an issue with the keyboard application
Fortunately, the above issues all have quick solutions, and you can find them below. Slow Keys is Turned On When pressing the keys on your MacBook and the result is a slower response, the likely cause is that slow keys is turned on. This feature can easily become turned on by accident and to turn it off, follow these steps:
  1. Click on the Apple icon found in the upper left-hand corner of the screen
  2. Select System Preferences
  3. Click on Accessibility
  4. Choose Keyboard
  5. Under the Hardware option, uncheck the Slow Keys box
Damaged or Dirty Keys The keyboard on your MacBook should be cleaned often as grime, dirt, and debris can become trapped underneath them and then cause issues when you attempt to use the keyboard. Cleaning up your MacBook keyboard is simple and easy – follow these steps:
  1. Shutdown your MacBook and then unplug the charger from it
    1. Shutting your MacBook down will ensure that you do not accidentally press any buttons as you are cleaning the keys.
    2. Unplugging your MacBook will ensure your computer is protected should you accidentally spill something. If your MacBook is plugged in and you do spill something, it could short out.
  2. Turn your MacBook upside down and shake it carefully
    1. Crumbs, dirt, and debris can hide under your keys and turning the MacBook over will help to loosen the gunk. To ensure you do not make a mess, do this part over the trash can or lay something down to catch the crumbs and dirt.
  3. Clean out underneath the keys with either compressed air or a soft bristled brush
    1. A can of compressed air can help you quickly clean out underneath your keys and will eliminate any of the debris, dust, or dirt that is harbored. You should spray the air in a zig-zag formation across the keyboard, working in sections. Continue until you have cleaned the entire keyboard.
    2. If you do not have compressed air, do not panic. You can effectively clean your keyboard with a soft bristled brush such as a paintbrush. Simply use the brush to wipe the keys and remove the debris. If you find it difficult to remove the debris or you notice that the brush is pushing it further underneath the key, turn the keyboard upside down and then proceed to use the brush.
