I Can’t Get My Phone to Turn On – Now What?

I Can’t Get My Phone to Turn On – Now What?

Did you press the power button on your phone, but nothing will happen? If this is happening to you, it is a common problem, so try not to panic. Below, we will go over some different steps you can take when your iPhone won’t turn on. The hope here is to get your phone to a point where it will turn on for you while addressing the issue that may be going on.  Charging Port Is Damaged  Your charging port gets a lot of use and wear and tear. In fact, it is one of the areas of your phone that is used the most. Think about it. You plug your charger in and take it out daily – sometimes multiple times a day. Over time, dirt and debris make their way into the port and can cause issues with the device recognizing the charger.  One way for you to troubleshoot to see if this is the problem is to try a new cable on your phone. If it works, then the problem is solved. If the new cable does not work, you want to try to test it on a different device. If it does charge the other device, then the issue is your phone. Take some time to look inside the charging port to see if the pins are bent, broken, or damaged, and clean out any dirt or debris that may be present.  Firmware Problems  If no obvious damage has happened to your phone such as a drop and the phone is not working, you may be experiencing a firmware problem. To fix any issues with firmware, you will need to make sure that you restart your phone.  A force restart is generally required and can be done by following the directions below based on your iPhone model. iPhone 6 and earlier versions
  1. Press both the home and power buttons at the exact same time
  2. Continue to hold the buttons until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen
iPhone 7
  1. Press both the power and volume down buttons at the same time
  2. Continue to hold the buttons until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen
iPhone 8 and newer versions
  1. Press and then release the volume up button
  2. Quickly do the same for the volume down button
  3. Press and hold the power button
  4. Continue to hold until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen
If you find that a force restart is not working immediately, you can try charging your phone for 15 minutes and then repeat the process.  Battery is Bad  If you are not having luck with the steps above, you may have a bad battery. If your battery is bad, it can cause issues such as the phone not holding a charge. Being able to identify a bad battery can be tricky because sometimes you can tell when it is bad and other times it may not be so obvious. For example, if your battery is swollen, you would definitely know there was an issue with it.  To check the health of your phone’s battery, do the following:
  1. Open settings
  2. Go to battery
  3. Click on battery health
  4. Click check the maximum capacity percentage
If your battery is showing anything less than 80 percent, you will need to replace the battery in your phone.  Logic Board is Damaged  When the above problems do not work, you may actually have a problem with your logic board. One of the symptoms of a bad logic board is that your phone is not turning on. Other issues can include failure of the dot projector, which allows you access to your phone through face recognition mapping. You may also struggle with the face ID sensor experiencing issues.
