There aren’t many feelings worse than sticking your iPhone into the charger when you need it the most, only to find it not charging. While it could be the cable, oftentimes it is not. The way Apple has designed their iPhone models creates easy access for dust and debris to enter your iPhone’s charger port. This can cause a lot of hardware issues – mainly with charging.
Anytime you put your phone in your pocket, backpack or purse, a bunch of tiny particles gets collected and prevents the charging port from receiving the charging cable’s output. If you see your phone going in and out of charging mode, you are likely experiencing some dust problems.
Before You Begin!
Please keep in mind that if you are going to be doing any sort of cleaning or repair to your charging port, you need to be
extremely gentle. You don’t want to jam things in there nor do you want to ruin the receptor inside your charging port.
Before you begin any sort of procedure, also try and have a desk lamp or LED flashlight shining into your charger port. You want to make sure you can see what you are poking around at so that you do not permanently damage the port.
Last but not least – turn off your device!
Compressed Air
An easy way to blow out debris from the port is to use compressed air. You can find a
Falcon Compressed Air Duster for $7.99 on Amazon. You simply hold the red nozzle just outside your charger port and, in spurts, blow air into the port. This will make any lint, debris, or dust, come loose and hopefully fall out of your charging port.
We recommend you to not stick the nozzle into the charger port as this could be too intensive for your phone and can accidently shoot wet bursts of air into your charger port.
Toothpick
An alternative and more old-school method involves using a toothpick to gently scrape out any lint or dust from the port. This is more effective after you’ve used some compressed air to loosen up the debris in your port.
Please ensure that you do not use anything metallic as you do not want a potential short circuit to occur, which can ruin your device. You also don’t want to use anything too sharp or too big, as it could damage your charger port. Sticking some tape in there to gobble up any remaining debris might be wise to do as well.
